NVIDIA Control Panel Missing? Where Settings Moved

If you right-clicked your desktop looking for the NVIDIA Control Panel and it wasn't there, nothing is broken. NVIDIA retired it, and every setting you used to change now lives somewhere else.
This guide maps each one to its new location, covers the two settings that no longer exist at all, and explains why a lot of the optimization guides you'll find on Google are now giving instructions you physically cannot follow.
Where did the NVIDIA Control Panel go?
NVIDIA retired the NVIDIA Control Panel on 26 May 2026, with the release of GeForce driver 610.47. After 20 years it is no longer part of the Game Ready or Studio driver packages, and its settings have been moved into the NVIDIA App. The desktop right-click shortcut is gone, and the panel receives no further features or fixes.
The same driver release opened NVIDIA's R610 branch and moved CUDA support to 13.3, so this wasn't a quiet swap — it was a deliberate platform change. The NVIDIA App had already replaced GeForce Experience; absorbing the Control Panel finishes a migration NVIDIA began signalling back in 2023.
To open it: launch the NVIDIA App from the Start menu or the system tray. There is no desktop context-menu entry any more, so if you've been reaching the panel by right-clicking your desktop for the last decade, that habit is the thing that broke — not your driver install.
Why can I still see the NVIDIA Control Panel?
Because of how you updated. This is the single most confusing part of the change, and it's why two people on the same driver version report different things:
- Clean install of 610.47 or newer — the Control Panel is removed entirely.
- Upgrade over an existing driver — the old panel is left behind on disk. It still opens. It still appears in your Start menu.
If you're in the second group, the panel you're looking at is an orphan. It works today, it gets no fixes, and it can break with any future Windows or driver update. Anything you configure in it may also drift out of sync with what the App reports.

This is the mapping most guides haven't caught up with yet. Left column is what you used to do; right column is where to do it now.

Two notes worth internalising before you start clicking.
Global vs Program Settings. Global applies to everything on the machine; Program Settings applies to one executable. Prefer Program Settings when you're tuning for a single game — that way an aggressive value can't quietly break an older title, a creative app, or your browser's hardware acceleration.
Not every setting appears for every reader. Availability varies by GPU generation, by laptop vs desktop, and by NVIDIA App build. If something in the table isn't on your screen, it doesn't apply to your hardware — skip it rather than hunting for it.
Which settings actually matter for gaming
The full breakdown lives in our NVIDIA and AMD GPU optimization guide, but the short version, using the new paths:
- Power Management Mode → Prefer maximum performance. The default "Optimal power" drops GPU clocks during brief load dips between frames, and the ramp back up shows up as microstutter.
- Low Latency Mode → On. This shortens the render queue. See the caveat below before you reach for "Ultra".
- Shader Cache Size → Unlimited (or 10 GB+). Lets DX12 and Vulkan titles keep compiled shaders instead of evicting them, which is what causes first-session compilation stutter to come back.
- Threaded Optimization → Auto. On older CPUs, test On against Off and judge by your 1% lows and frame-time consistency, not average FPS — thread-management overhead can raise the average while making pacing worse.
- Vertical Sync → Off, and control sync in-game or via G-Sync instead.
Use Reflex instead of Low Latency Mode where you can
This is the tradeoff most guides get wrong. NVIDIA Reflex is set in the game's own menu, it overrides the driver's Low Latency Mode, and it is more effective. The two do not stack.
So: if a game offers Reflex, turn Reflex on in-game and leave the driver's Low Latency Mode Off. Only use Low Latency Mode as the fallback for games without Reflex support. If you do set it to "Ultra" and the game starts feeling spiky rather than snappier — which happens when you're GPU-bound — drop back to "On".

How do I set up G-Sync in the NVIDIA App?
Go to System → Displays, find your monitor, and enable G-Sync.
You'll be offered a scope. Choose full screen rather than "full screen and windowed". The windowed option is a legacy behaviour for older games, and enabling it can trigger variable refresh on the desktop, which shows up as your refresh rate dropping unexpectedly while you're just browsing.
Modern games run fine under the full-screen scope whether they use exclusive fullscreen or borderless windowed. Pair G-Sync with V-Sync off in-game and a frame cap slightly under your refresh rate — the reasoning is in our monitor settings guide for gaming.
Settings that no longer exist
Two things people still search for aren't in the App because they aren't in the driver any more.
Maximum pre-rendered frames. This one is a long-running zombie. It was replaced by Low Latency Mode years before the Control Panel itself was retired, yet guides still tell readers to "set pre-rendered frames to 1". There is no such slider. Low Latency Mode is the control that governs render-queue depth now, and setting it to On is the equivalent of what that old advice was reaching for.
PhysX processor selection. The old "Configure Surround, PhysX" page is legacy. PhysX has been de-emphasised across recent GPU generations, and the setting may not appear for your card at all. If it isn't there, there's nothing to configure and nothing lost.
There's also one addition with no Control Panel equivalent: Smooth Motion, a driver-level frame-generation feature for games that lack DLSS Frame Generation. It smooths perceived motion but adds latency, so treat it as a single-player option and leave it off for competitive shooters.
What this means for older guides you find online
Search "best NVIDIA Control Panel settings" today and most of page one will walk you through a panel that doesn't ship any more. At least one widely-shared guide explicitly advises using the classic Control Panel for performance settings "until the App reaches parity" — advice that is now impossible to follow on a clean install.
Three ways to sanity-check any GPU guide you read from here on:
- Does it say "right-click your desktop"? That entry point is gone. The guide predates 610.47.
- Does it mention maximum pre-rendered frames? It's years out of date, not months.
- Does it treat GeForce Experience as separate from driver settings? Both live in the NVIDIA App now.

Can I get the old NVIDIA Control Panel back?
Partly, and we'd recommend against relying on it.
NVIDIA still hosts a Control Panel download on the Microsoft Store, but it is in maintenance mode: no new features, no bug fixes. Community tooling such as NVCleanstall can force-inject the legacy panel into a 610.47 install, but since the panel is no longer maintained, a future Windows or driver update is likely to break it.
The one legitimate exception is professional hardware — RTX PRO cards keep the Control Panel temporarily while NVIDIA finishes migrating enterprise features into the App, after which it goes away there too.
If your reason for wanting it back is that a specific setting seems missing, check the mapping table above first. In most cases the setting exists, it just moved.
Keeping driver settings from drifting
One thing worth knowing regardless of which interface you use: driver and Windows settings don't always stay where you put them. Feature updates and some cumulative updates can quietly revert configuration, and GPU control-panel profiles are among the more fragile items.

The NVIDIA Control Panel is gone as of driver 610.47, and if you can still see it that's a leftover from an in-place upgrade rather than a sign it survived. Nearly every setting still exists — 3D and performance options under Graphics, display and G-Sync options under System → Displays, Resizable BAR under System Info — so the mapping table above is usually all you need. The only real casualties are maximum pre-rendered frames, which Low Latency Mode replaced years ago, and legacy PhysX selection.
