DLSS 4.5 vs DLSS 5 (2026): Upscaling, Neural Rendering & Frame Gen
DLSS 4.5 and DLSS 5 are not interchangeable FPS presets. DLSS 4.5 improves familiar rendering technologies such as Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation. DLSS 5 adds 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, a different technology that enhances a game's lighting and materials using information provided by the engine.
As of October 17, 2026, DLSS 5 is available in NBA 2K27 on supported GeForce RTX 50-series hardware, with additional game support announced. NVIDIA also launched an October model update and a separate Frame Generation beta. This guide explains what actually changed — and what your GPU can use today — without treating generated frame rate as a universal measure of responsiveness.
DLSS 4.5 vs DLSS 5: The Key Difference
| | DLSS 4.5 | DLSS 5 | |---|---|---| | Primary focus | Reconstruction and performance features | 3D-Guided Neural Rendering for richer lighting and materials | | What it uses | Super Resolution, Frame Generation and associated models, depending on game/GPU | Engine-rendered frames plus scene information such as geometry, lighting and motion vectors | | Rollout | Super Resolution update released January 2026; Dynamic/6X MFG added for RTX 50-series in March | Initial release September 2026 in NBA 2K27 | | GPU support | Super Resolution model on supported GeForce RTX GPUs; advanced MFG modes require eligible RTX 50-series hardware | RTX 50-series at launch; future-generation support must follow official announcements | | Does it replace DLSS Super Resolution? | Not applicable | No. NVIDIA says DLSS 5 is an optional, independent feature that developers may combine with other DLSS technologies | | Is every game supported? | No, integration or a compatible NVIDIA App override is required | No, explicit game support and hardware eligibility are required |
The naming matters: DLSS 5 is not automatically 'DLSS 4.5 but faster.' A more detailed rendering model may improve visual fidelity while adding workload; its actual impact varies by game, hardware, resolution and implementation.
What DLSS 4.5 Adds
Second-generation Super Resolution transformer
NVIDIA introduced a second-generation transformer model for DLSS Super Resolution in January 2026. Compatible games can use it via NVIDIA App support or direct integration, subject to GPU and game requirements. It aims to improve reconstructed details and stability in motion. It is not guaranteed to outperform every other render mode in every title.
NVIDIA's DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution announcement covers the rollout. If you already own a compatible RTX GPU, this is the DLSS feature to investigate before assuming that you need DLSS 5.
Dynamic and 6X Multi Frame Generation
The March 2026 DLSS 4.5 rollout added Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and a 6X mode for supported RTX 50-series systems and games. Dynamic MFG can adjust the generated-frame multiplier relative to a target frame rate. This is not six times the underlying game simulation rate, and it does not guarantee that input responsiveness scales alongside the displayed FPS.
See NVIDIA's March 10 DLSS 4.5 feature announcement for its hardware scope and release timetable.
What Is DLSS 5's 3D-Guided Neural Rendering?
NVIDIA introduced DLSS 5 in September 2026, initially in NBA 2K27. Unlike Super Resolution, which reconstructs a higher-resolution image from fewer rendered pixels, DLSS 5's feature analyzes engine-supplied information and enhances aspects of the rendered scene, notably lighting and materials.
According to NVIDIA, the model uses the rendered frame and engine guidance rather than generating a scene from a text prompt. It is designed to preserve the game's authored geometry, textures and lighting foundation while adding real-time material and illumination details. Studio-specific implementation and artistic control still matter.
DLSS 5 can operate alongside DLSS Super Resolution, frame generation and ray reconstruction if the developer supports that combination. A game offering DLSS 4.5 does not automatically offer DLSS 5.

October 2026 DLSS 5 Update: What Changed?
NVIDIA's October 13 release notes outlined three separate developments that should not be mixed together:
- Faster DLSS 5 rendering model. NVIDIA said its updated 3D-Guided Neural Rendering model reduced internal compute overhead and would arrive in NBA 2K27 on October 16, as well as on supported RTX Spark systems. NVIDIA's '2X faster model' figure describes the model improvement, not a promise of twice the game's total FPS.
- New game support roadmap. NVIDIA announced Hogwarts Legacy for November 5 and also discussed Where Winds Meet and RTX Remix support, with dates varying by title.
- Separate Frame Generation Performance Mode beta. NVIDIA made an NVIDIA App beta option available for Frame Generation. This is not itself DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering; don't describe it as the new DLSS 5 upscaler.
NVIDIA also cited a possible up to 1.4X in-game frame-rate gain for the updated model in its specific NBA 2K27 demonstration. That is a vendor-reported, scenario-specific figure, not an independent measurement or an estimate for other games.

Which DLSS Features Work on My GPU?
RTX 20/30-series: Check compatible DLSS Super Resolution modes and game support. DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering is not generally available on these GPUs as of this article's update. Don't buy a new GPU just because a web guide uses 'DLSS 5' as a catch-all label.
RTX 40-series: DLSS Super Resolution and supported Frame Generation features remain relevant. NVIDIA has discussed exploring broader DLSS 5 support after focusing on RTX 50-series optimization, but availability should not be assumed until announced.
RTX 50-series: Eligible games can use DLSS 4.5's advanced MFG modes and, separately, DLSS 5's 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. Availability is game-specific. Consider thermal headroom, VRAM capacity and your priorities when selecting modes.
AMD Radeon / Intel Arc: NVIDIA DLSS is proprietary to compatible NVIDIA RTX hardware. If your game offers FSR or XeSS, use those instead. Our DLSS, FSR and XeSS comparison helps you select an option without relying on brand-only claims.
FPS, Image Quality and Input Lag: How to Decide
When comparing modes, ask which question you actually want answered:
- Do I need more GPU performance? Test native resolution against supported Super Resolution Quality/Balanced modes at the same scene.
- Do I want smoother display output in a visually rich single-player game? Check eligible Frame Generation options. Record both actual/base FPS and displayed FPS, plus how controls feel.
- Do I prefer enhanced lighting and materials? In supported titles, evaluate DLSS 5's 3D-Guided Neural Rendering for visual quality and its GPU cost.
- Am I optimizing competitive responsiveness? Favor reliable base frame rate, consistent frame times and any correctly implemented low-latency technology. Generated frames don't equal newly simulated player inputs.
There is no honest universal '30–60% free FPS' claim that applies across games and GPUs. A result needs the game version, driver, exact settings, card, resolution and a reproducible comparison. Keep measurements separate from NVIDIA's vendor examples.
For system-side diagnosis, see our GPU optimization guide, input-lag troubleshooting guide and RTX 50-series settings guide. Be cautious with guides promising gains from disabled security features or obscure registry keys.
How to Configure the NVIDIA App Safely
- Download NVIDIA App and drivers from official NVIDIA channels; note your current versions.
- Open the game's graphics settings and check which DLSS features it actually exposes.
- Where supported, compare native against Super Resolution Quality first; change one setting at a time.
- If using NVIDIA App DLSS overrides, check NVIDIA's supported-game list and the application's current options. Don't apply an incompatible model override to every title.
- If Frame Generation is supported, compare base FPS, displayed FPS, frame times and input feel rather than treating the frame multiplier as a direct performance guarantee.
- If the game supports DLSS 5, evaluate its additional rendering cost and lighting/material trade-offs separately from Super Resolution.
Can SageTweaks Improve DLSS Performance?
SageTweaks provides guided Windows optimization workflows, but the game's renderer, supported DLSS feature set and NVIDIA driver remain in control of DLSS itself. SageTweaks does not unlock incompatible DLSS features, change your graphics card's architecture or guarantee FPS gains. Review our Windows gaming settings guide to rule out ordinary bottlenecks without sacrificing security.
FAQ
Is DLSS 5 better than DLSS 4.5 for FPS?
They address partly different goals. DLSS 4.5's Super Resolution is a performance/image reconstruction feature; DLSS 5's 3D-guided rendering changes lighting and material appearance. Test the specific features a game offers rather than comparing their version numbers as if they were identical modes.
Does DLSS 5 work on RTX 40-series today?
The confirmed launch rollout focuses on RTX 50-series hardware. NVIDIA has discussed expanding support in the future, but this article does not claim official RTX 40-series availability.
Is the new Frame Generation Performance Mode DLSS 5?
No. NVIDIA announced that beta alongside its DLSS 5 model news; they are different components of its rendering technology portfolio.
Does 6X Multi Frame Generation mean six times less input latency?
No. Generated display frames do not increase simulation or input sampling at the same rate, so test responsiveness independently.
