NVIDIA App Complete Guide: Best Settings for Gaming 2026

NVIDIA officially retired the 20-year-old NVIDIA Control Panel in driver 610.47 (May 2026). All display and 3D settings now live in the unified NVIDIA App, which also replaces GeForce Experience — no mandatory login required. If your old Control Panel shortcuts stopped opening, this is why.
The good news: every optimization you relied on is still there, just in a new home. The bad news: a few settings moved or got renamed, and some migration gotchas can silently cost you FPS. Here's the complete 2026 walkthrough.
Power Management Mode: Prefer Maximum Performance
NVIDIA App → Graphics → Global Settings → Power management mode → Prefer maximum performance.
This is the single most impactful global setting. By default, NVIDIA favors "Optimal power," which downclocks the GPU between frames to save power. That causes clock ramp-up stutter in CPU-bound titles — exactly the microstutter you feel in spawn or during big team fights.
Set this to Prefer maximum performance. Your GPU idles at a higher clock, but the FPS consistency improves dramatically, and 1% low frame times tighten. On a desktop, the idle power difference is negligible.
For individual games, you can override this per game profile instead of globally — useful if you want battery savings on a laptop. Head to Graphics → Program Settings → <game> → Power management mode.
Low Latency Mode vs NVIDIA Reflex: Don't Use Both
The most common migration mistake. Low Latency Mode and NVIDIA Reflex do the same job — reducing render queue latency — and stacking them adds frame pacing issues instead of helping.

If you set Low Latency Mode to Ultra AND enable Reflex, you double-buffer the render queue and can actually introduce input lag. Pick one.

Graphics → Global Settings → Shader cache size → 10 GB (or Unlimited on a large NVMe).
Modern DirectX 12 and Vulkan games compile shaders at runtime. If the shader cache is too small, Windows evicts old entries, and you get stutter when you revisit areas or re-launch a game — the "compiler hitch" you notice in open-world RPGs.
Set it to 10 GB minimum. On a dedicated gaming SSD with room to spare, Unlimited is fine and fully prevents shader-related stutter. This is one of the most effective free fixes for inconsistent 1% lows in DX12 games.
DLSS Overrides: Force Newer Presets on Old Games
The NVIDIA App added DLSS overrides — letting you force a newer DLSS transformer model onto games that shipped with an older preset.
Graphics → Program Settings → <game> → DLSS → Override → DLSS Frame Generation / Upscale.

Overrides only apply to games using compatible DLSS versions. If a game's overlay shows "Not supported," the engine version is too old — leave it on default rather than forcing, or you can cause a crash on launch.
Per-Game vs Global Settings Strategy
Best practice for 2026:
- Set the five globals above (maximum performance, shader cache, low latency baseline)
- Then create per-game profiles only where a game needs something different — e.g., a poorly-optimized title that wants Ultra overrides, or an esports title where you disable frame generation
Don't over-tune every game globally; per-game profiles in NVIDIA App are lightweight and don't hurt until you need them.
Migration Gotchas
- Old tweaks don't auto-transfer: some legacy Control Panel profiles were not imported. Re-verify your settings after updating to 610.47+.
- Don't install from a partial download: the App updater can blackscreen a driver if interrupted — always let it finish, then restart.
- Logout not required: driver 610.47 no longer requires a GeForce Experience login for basic features.
