Follow these steps in order. Each one is independent — skip any that don't apply to your setup.
Open GTA 5 -> Settings -> Graphics -> Advanced Graphics. Extended Distance Scaling and Grass Quality are the two most commonly reported FPS killers, especially in GTA Online with heavy traffic or explosions on screen. Start both near Low/Normal, then raise them one step at a time and benchmark your own PC before deciding what to keep.
MSAA (multi-sample anti-aliasing) is far more GPU-expensive than FXAA. In Settings -> Graphics, test FXAA alone or FXAA + a lower MSAA level instead of high MSAA. Also review Post FX and Reflection Quality — both add rendering cost with a visual payoff that varies by scene and monitor size.
Population Density and Population Variety (Settings -> Graphics) control how many pedestrians and vehicles render at once. Downtown Los Santos and busy GTA Online lobbies are where this setting costs the most frame time — lower it if you notice drops specifically in crowded areas rather than open desert.
The graphics menu shows a VRAM usage bar as you change settings. Keep "Ignore Suggested Limits" off unless you know your GPU has headroom — exceeding available VRAM causes stuttering and texture pop-in rather than a clean FPS drop, and is a common cause of unexplained hitching.
Press Win+X -> Windows PowerShell (Admin) -> paste: powercfg -duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61. Then go to Control Panel -> Power Options and select "Ultimate Performance." GTA 5 and GTA Online both suffer sudden frame-time spikes when Windows lets the CPU downclock during a lull, then has to ramp back up mid-firefight.
Launch the game and open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) -> Details tab. Find GTA5.exe for the Legacy build or GTA5_Enhanced.exe for the Enhanced edition, right-click -> Set priority -> High. This only affects CPU scheduling priority, not GPU allocation, so results depend on whether your system is CPU-bound.
The Enhanced edition adds ray-traced reflections/shadows and DLSS/FSR upscaling under Settings -> Graphics. Ray tracing is one of the most expensive toggles in the game — test it off first, then test DLSS/FSR Quality or Balanced modes to recover frame rate on supported GPUs before re-enabling ray tracing.
Go to Windows Settings -> Gaming -> Xbox Game Bar and toggle it off. Disable Discord overlay (Discord -> Settings -> Game Overlay) and any GPU-vendor overlay (GeForce Experience, Adrenalin). Close browsers, streaming software, and other background apps you don’t need before launching — check Task Manager CPU/RAM at idle first.

Benchmark before and after each change on your own PC — GTA 5 can be CPU-bound, GPU-bound, or VRAM-limited depending on your hardware.
GTA Online adds network overhead (session sync, other players’ vehicles and activity) and typically has far more entities on screen at once — more pedestrians, more traffic, more players’ properties and effects loaded in busy public lobbies. Story mode’s population is scripted and generally lighter, so the same settings that run fine solo can drop frames in a full Online session.
Extended Distance Scaling and Grass Quality are the most commonly reported culprits, followed by MSAA, Population Density/Variety in busy areas, and Reflection Quality. Exact impact depends on your CPU, GPU, VRAM, and whether you’re in a dense area or open terrain — test each one individually on your own setup.
The Enhanced edition adds ray tracing, higher-fidelity assets, and DLSS/FSR upscaling, which changes the performance profile compared to Legacy. Ray tracing in particular is expensive — test it off first, then use DLSS/FSR to recover frame rate before deciding whether the visual upgrade is worth the cost on your hardware.
Leave it off unless you’ve confirmed your GPU has spare VRAM headroom for your chosen settings. The in-game VRAM meter shows usage as you adjust settings live — exceeding your VRAM budget typically causes stuttering and texture pop-in rather than a smooth FPS drop, which is a common source of confusing performance complaints.
GTA Online added BattlEye anti-cheat in September 2024.
