PC Optimization Myths Debunked: What Actually Works and What's Snake Oil

The PC optimization world is full of snake oil. Paid "FPS boosters," registry cleaners, custom "gaming ISOs" — most of it delivers under 1% improvement, and some of it actively breaks your Windows installation.
As a company that sells optimization software, we have every reason to be honest here: most tricks marketed as game-changers are placebo. Here's what genuinely works, what's pure snake oil, and how to tell the difference.
Myth: Registry Cleaners Boost Gaming FPS
Verdict: Snake oil.
Registry cleaners were relevant on the spinning-disk era, when a bloated registry actually slowed Windows startup. On modern SSDs and with Windows 11's efficient NTFS registry handling, "cleaning" the registry produces zero measurable FPS improvement. SaaS system cleaners love them because they scare easy-to-trigger "issues" pop-ups — but removing registry entries you don't understand can break installed apps.
Standard Windows maintenance tools (Storage Sense, Disk Cleanup) handle everything worth doing. Skip third-party registry cleaners entirely.
Myth: "Gaming ISOs" Give You Free Performance
Verdict: snake oil with risk.
Custom "gaming" Windows ISOs (stripped, pre-tweaked installs you torrent) claim big FPS gains. Reality: most do nothing beyond what any reputable debloating guide does, and they come with serious costs:
- They often break Windows Update and security components, which become impossible to repair
- They may remove Windows Security integration, exposing you to malware
- They're not verifiable — you're installing an unknown vendor's unsigned image
If you want a clean, optimized Windows, install the official ISO from Microsoft and apply safe tweaks yourself. See our guide to disabling Windows 11 bloatware for what's genuinely safe to remove.
Myth: RAM Cleaners (and "FPS Boosters") Improve Performance
Verdict: placebo.
"RAM cleaners" free up "used" RAM by forcing Windows to page it out — but Windows already manages spare RAM efficiently. Empty RAM isn't faster; it's just unused. Purging it often makes things slower because the OS has to reload the data you evicted.
Similarly, magic "FPS booster" toggles that promise 30% speedups deliver ~1% and sometimes cause more problems. Windows' scheduler already suspends unused background processes; you don't need a third-party tool to do it.
Myth: Disabling Superfetch / Prefetch Helps
Verdict: False — it hurts.
Older guides told you to disable Superfetch (SysMain). On SSDs, Superfetch's preloading of frequently-used apps is near-zero cost and actually gives you marginal launch-speed gains. Disabling it provides no FPS benefit and can slow cold starts of common apps.
Related: what does help on the RAM side is your memory running at its rated speed — see our XMP and dual-channel memory guide for the real FPS lever (5–15% in CPU-bound titles).
The Myth of "Closing All Background Processes"
Verdict: mostly unnecessary.
"End every .exe except the game" was a 2012-era holdout. Modern Windows 11 handles background scheduling well, and closing processes you still need (Discord, overlays) just means re-opening them. A good Power Plan and managing heavy bloatware (RGB control suites, iCUE, Synapse polling) matters more than nuking every background process.
What actually works, though, we've measured:
What Actually Works (Real Optimizations)
These are benchmarked, reproducible improvements:
- Disable VBS / Memory Integrity — worth 5–15% in CPU-bound games (with the security tradeoff it implies)
- Set the High Performance / Ultimate power plan — stabilizes 1% lows
- Clean GPU driver install (DDU) — fixes stutter and driver conflicts
- Enable XMP/DDR5 EXPO — 5–15% in CPU-bound titles
- Trim heavy startup bloatware — faster boot, fewer resource fights
- GPU power management = max performance — better clock stability

How to Spot Snake Oil
Ask three questions about any "optimizer":
- Does it explain the mechanism? Vague claims = red flag.
- Is it measuring anything? No before/after benchmark = it's marketing.
- What does it touch? If it edits the registry or unsets system integrity, it's risky.
A reputable optimizer shows real, testable results and documents every change. SageTweaks does real optimizations — VBS control, power plan, startup and driver hygiene, safe bloatware removal — with each change documented and reversible. No fake FPS-boost promises, no snake oil.
