Enshrouded 1.0 PC Optimization: Fix Crashes, Stutter & FPS Drops

Enshrouded 1.0 left Early Access on October 15, 2026. The first two official hotfixes already addressed several crashes and rendering issues. Before following a generic 'more FPS' guide, check whether your specific symptom is a known issue the developers have already patched.
This page separates verified fixes from Keen Games from general troubleshooting steps you can try safely. It does not invent game-specific benchmarks, quote nonexistent tested presets or imply that every crash is a Windows fault.
Enshrouded 1.0 Patch Status: What Was Actually Fixed?
October 15: Hotfix 1.0.0.1 — Build 1267041
Keen Games' official hotfix 1.0.0.1 notes document fixes for random crashes, crashes associated with certain connected PC peripherals, and an indoor dynamic-lighting problem. The notes also describe a temporary audio-volume workaround: if the hall reverb or voice-over ducking sounds wrong when the game's master slider is below 100%, the studio suggests leaving the in-game master slider at 100% and managing listening volume through Windows until a proper fix arrives.
Those notes also acknowledged a world-editing problem after the hotfix. Don't assume that a workaround mentioned for build 1267041 still applies once later fixes are installed.
October 16: Hotfix 1.0.0.2 — Build 1269579
In hotfix 1.0.0.2, the studio reported fixes for a world-settings editing issue, rare save-migration crashes involving corrupt character saves, unusual dense grey fog on some NVIDIA GPUs, and a small number of factory interaction problems.
Important for missing characters: Keen Games explicitly said some corrupted characters could remain absent pending further recovery work. Do not delete character files, overwrite cloud saves or start invasive 'save repairs' based on a generic guide. Preserve existing data and watch the developer's support channel.
What should you do first?
- Open the game's launcher and install the latest officially offered update.
- Note the visible build/version and compare it to Keen Games' news and patch notes.
- Identify the specific symptom — launch crash, random crash, grey fog, stutter, audio behavior, or missing character.
- Choose the matching step below instead of modifying five Windows settings at once.
Fix: Enshrouded Crashes on Launch or Mid-Session
A crash can be caused by a game bug, a bad update, a corrupted installation, driver trouble or a system-level stability problem. No single fix is universal.
Step 1 — Update the game. The 1.0 launch hotfixes specifically addressed crashes. A pre-hotfix install may be the entire explanation.
Step 2 — Verify game files through Steam. Open the game in your library, select Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. This checks installed game files; it is not a command to erase local world data.
Step 3 — Consider the peripheral issue if your crash resembles it. The first hotfix addressed crashes with certain attached peripherals. If you're fully updated but can reproduce a crash associated with a nonessential controller or USB accessory, try one controlled change — disconnect that accessory only while it is safe to do so — then reconnect later. Do not unplug storage devices during writes.
Step 4 — Check for a graphics driver regression. Record the current NVIDIA/AMD/Intel driver version and note whether the failure began before or after a driver update. Use vendor release notes to decide whether an update or supported rollback is appropriate. Avoid untrusted driver-download sites and aggressive 'driver cleaner' scripts. See our safe driver-update guide.
Step 5 — Collect evidence. Check Windows Reliability Monitor and the game's official log/reporting guidance. Note the timestamp, game version, exact error, hardware and whether the crash occurs in a particular area. Do not post personal file paths, account tokens or crash reports containing private data in public forums.
If the game crashes during a character/world save migration, stop repeated save manipulation and consult Keen Games' current recovery instructions first.
Fix: Grey Fog or Strange Lighting on NVIDIA GPUs
Keen Games' October 16 patch notes specifically mention grey fog affecting certain NVIDIA systems, often visible in particular areas. First confirm you are on build 1269579 or later. If the issue persists after updating:
- Compare the same location before/after a full game restart.
- Record the driver and game versions.
- Verify the game files if the symptoms started with an interrupted update.
- Report reproducible cases to the developer with a screenshot and version information.
Don't disable Windows Defender, Secure Boot or TPM, and don't edit random shader-cache registry keys. The reported fog defect was acknowledged as a game-side rendering issue.
Fix: Stuttering or Low FPS Without Guessing at Benchmarks
No universal Enshrouded 1.0 'best settings' table can honestly promise a fixed FPS increase on every PC. Use your own frame-time results rather than a screenshot of someone else's settings.
| Symptom | What to inspect first | Next measured change | |---|---|---| | GPU utilization very high | Resolution, render scale, temperature, graphics preset | Lower GPU-heavy effects where available, or try a supported in-game upscaler | | CPU overloaded while GPU has headroom | Background processes, game simulation activity, temperature | Close genuinely unnecessary foreground work; reduce CPU-heavy game settings where offered | | Intermittent hitch after a patch | Game version, shader preparation and repeatability | Revisit the same location after updating and a clean restart | | Increasing slowdown over a long session | Memory use, temperatures, storage activity | Compare short and long sessions and document any buildup | | Frame-time graph unstable but average FPS seems fine | Pacing, display mode, sync and frame cap | Test one consistent cap/sync configuration at a time |
Suggested process: keep the default graphics preset as a baseline, test a repeatable 60-second route in the same game region, record average FPS and frame-time consistency, change one setting, and compare. If a setting helps on your setup, keep it. If not, revert it.
For the Windows-side diagnosis, see Fix stuttering in games and Fix sudden FPS drops. Don't disable security features as routine 'optimizations'; Enshrouded troubleshooting doesn't require that.
Missing Character or World After Updating?
Do not delete, overwrite, rename or reimport cloud/local saves before making a safe copy and reading the latest official guidance. The October 16 hotfix addresses a migration crash but also states that recovery work for some corrupted characters was ongoing. A missing character does not prove the save is unrecoverable.
For Steam users, check Steam Cloud sync status and the developer's support advice. Avoid starting the game repeatedly on multiple machines while sync conflicts remain unresolved. Be explicit when asking for help: supply the installed version, whether you moved from Early Access, and whether the character was missing before or after an update.
Audio Sounds Wrong in Large Halls?
Hotfix 1.0.0.1's notes described unusual reverb and volume ducking with the in-game master volume below 100%. As a temporary studio-documented workaround, set the game's master volume to 100% and lower volume through Windows instead. Use a comfortable listening level and check newer patch notes in case the underlying bug is already resolved.
Where SageTweaks Fits
A game's confirmed bugs need a game update. SageTweaks cannot restore a corrupted save, patch NVIDIA shader code or guarantee higher Enshrouded FPS.

Quick FAQ
Did Enshrouded 1.0 release on October 15, 2026?
Yes. Keen Games' official release announcement confirms October 15 as the end of Steam Early Access.
Is the NVIDIA fog bug fixed?
Keen Games listed a fix in the October 16 hotfix 1.0.0.2. Confirm that or a newer build is installed. If a similar-looking issue continues, it needs fresh evidence; don't assume it is the same defect.
Should I disable Windows security settings for extra FPS?
No. Turning off Defender, Memory Integrity, Secure Boot or update services is not a normal prerequisite for game performance and can expose the PC to real risk. Troubleshoot the game, drivers and graphics options first.
Can you give me the exact best graphics preset for my GPU?
Not honestly without the exact hardware, resolution, current patch and real measurements. Use a repeatable test route and adjust options in small steps.
